Sight Word: Because (or is it a sight word??)

Friday, April 30, 2021 No comments

We are about to start our opinion writing and I wanted to make sure everyone in the class can spell the word "because" since we will be using it often.

"Because" is not what I consider a sight word since it can be spelled phonetically.  It is one of our syllable patterns:  VCV pattern.  I put the word on the board and we coded the word and sounded it out.

We then learned a song to help us remember how to spell it.

We put the word in big letters on our wall.

We've been practicing writing it during reading groups.

ALL my students can now spell "because" and it makes this teacher heart happy.

Happy Teaching friends!

Fractional Parts and Journeys Unit 6 Sight Words

We worked on fractional parts of a set this week and did a few fun activities with it.  I bought a bag of spring foam stickers and gave each child two colors of the same shape and had them write the fractional parts.

We also used our Do-A-Dots for fractional parts of a caterpillar.

We had our first grade Easter Egg hunt on Thursday at the park. My coworkers and I couldn't resist getting in on the fun and we had our picture made with the Easter bunny.

If you teach Journeys, here is a copy of the sight word RAN boards that go with Unit 6.  Click on the picture to grab yourself a copy.

Totally random, but I think my brother kind of looks like Matt Damon.  I think its the nose.  He would probably kill me if he knew I posted this.  What do you think?

Happy Easter everyone!

Sight Word Practice

Every week, my students have two sight words to spell.  These were this week's words:  from, are.  This is one way we practice.

I give the student's the word with each letter in a box:
They cut the word apart and mix up the letters:
(sorry about the quality of this picture, I uploaded it about 7 times and this is the best one)

Then they put it in the correct order:

I then have them chant spell it.
Clap and chant spell it.
Spell it in a deep voice.
Spell it in a girly voice.
Spell it in a goat voice.

We then mix it up several more times and spell it again and again chanting the spelling of the word.

Then I have them glue it in their journals and write it five times.

How do you practice sight words?
Please share if you have some fun ideas.

Sight Word Practice

Have you ever used the rapid response boards for sight word practice?  I used these last year and I must say this has been the best tool I have found to teach sight words.  I send these home for homework Mon-Thurs. and then I make more copies to keep in the classroom.  I use them during reading group and I also have my students get them out and partner read them with each other usually pairing a strong reader with a weaker reader.  This not only helps them learn sight words but it also helps build fluency.  You can also use these boards to practice letters, numbers, and shapes.  To help students with b and d reversals, I made a board with only b's and d's.  Instead of saying the name of the letter, I had them say their sounds.  This is a wonderful tool.

If you use the Journey's reading series, then click on the picture to get the set for the Unit 1.
